AirPods Pro 3 vs Bose QC Ultra 2nd Gen — Who’s the Real King of ANC?

The AirPods Pro 3 are officially here with some noticeable improvements, and it’s only right we put them up against one of the strongest active noise cancelling earbuds on the market, the Bose Quiet Comfort Ultra 2nd Gen.

In this comparison, we will cover all the major features including sound quality, noise cancellation, microphone performance, and more, so that by the end, you can decide which one fits your needs the best.

Price

Starting off with price, the Bose QC Ultra sit at the higher end, retailing for $299, while the AirPods Pro 3 come in at $250. A difference of $50 might not seem like much, but for some people it could be the deciding factor when choosing between these two premium earbuds.

Pocketability and Durability

The AirPods still have the advantage when it comes to pocketability. Their case is clearly the more compact of the two, which matters if you plan on slipping these into a small pocket.

The AirPods case also features an upgraded IP57 rating along with the earbuds themselves, making them more durable overall. It is nice to have that extra peace of mind if you spend a lot of time outdoors.

The Bose QC Ultra are IPX4 rated, but the case itself does not have any official water or dust resistance. On the bright side, both cases support wireless charging, so neither one loses points there.

Another small but welcome tweak on the AirPods Pro 3 is the pairing process. Instead of a physical pairing button on the back of the case like before, you now simply double tap the front of the case to put them in pairing mode. It is a small but pretty cool update.

Tracking and Find My AirPods

For iOS users, the tracking ability of the AirPods case is something that simply cannot be overlooked. Not only can you chirp the earbuds to find them, you can also navigate directly to them in the Find My app, which makes it nearly impossible to lose these around the house. The Bose QC Ultra unfortunately do not have any real tracking options, which is a noticeable gap for anyone who tends to misplace their earbuds.

Comfort and Fit

When it comes to comfort, the AirPods Pro 3 have the slimmer profile. They do sit out from the ear a little more than before, but overall you feel them less in your ears compared to the Bose QC Ultra, which makes them easier to wear for longer stretches like long commutes, flights, and train rides.

The Bose QC Ultra are still fairly comfortable, but the design is obviously thicker, so you do feel their presence a bit more. On the flip side, the combination of stability bands and ear fins does make them more secure. So if you plan on working out or moving around a lot, the Bose might actually be the better option for you.

Sound Quality

When it comes to earbuds, sound quality is always a major priority, and this year Apple made some real improvements. The AirPods Pro 3 deliver stronger bass with more punch than before, and the sound stage feels wider compared to the Pro 2, which makes music more enjoyable.

The treble is cleaner and more defined, giving you much better dynamic range overall. Honestly, for a long time there was a sense of indifference toward the sound of the AirPods Pro lineup, but the Pro 3 genuinely impress. In many ways, this is the best sound Apple has ever put into a pair of AirPods.

The Bose QC Ultra, on the other hand, deliver a fuller and more powerful sound. The bass has more weight to it, giving you that low-end rumble especially on bass heavy tracks. On top of that, Bose includes a three band EQ, so you can ramp up the bass even further or bring out more clarity in the mids and highs. The AirPods do not offer that same level of dedicated EQ customization.

The treble on both sets is nicely balanced. Both are articulate without being too bright. To break it down simply, the AirPods Pro 3 are tuned for the masses with good bass, great clarity, and a strong sound stage without leaning too far in any direction.

It is a safe and versatile sound that anyone can appreciate. The Bose QC Ultra lean into an energetic, warm, and bass driven type of sound. With custom EQ, you can easily scale the bass back if you prefer, but if bass is your top priority, the Bose is the one to get.

Noise Cancellation

Right off the bat, the AirPods Pro 3 are stronger than the AirPods Pro 2 when it comes to noise cancellation, especially with lower frequency sounds. This improvement is most likely due to the new foam infused ear tips. If you are on the fence about upgrading from the second generation, ANC is definitely a step forward.

Compared to the Bose QC Ultra, the two are extremely close. At times it felt like the QC Ultra were a touch stronger, but switching back to the AirPods Pro 3 immediately put things back into question.

What can be said with confidence is that both of these are absolutely top tier performers. If noise cancellation is your top priority, either one will serve you well, and it probably should not be the sole deciding factor between the two.

Transparency Mode and Adaptive Features

When it comes to transparency mode, AirPods remain supreme. They let in more ambient sound, and it sounds the most natural. That is not really a surprise since Apple has been the leader in transparency mode for years. The Bose QC Ultra are not bad by any means. You can still hold a conversation or hear an announcement just fine. It just is not quite as refined as what the AirPods offer.

Both earbuds also include adaptive features to help reduce loud noises while in transparency mode. On the AirPods, this is called Hearing Reduction, and on the QC Ultra it is called Active Sense. Both work well, but Active Sense is noticeably more responsive. Everyday sounds like car doors slamming or clapping near the earbuds trigger it almost instantly, which is great for environments like a job site.

However, for casual everyday use, it can sometimes react to sounds that do not really require it, and there is currently no way to adjust the sensitivity. The good news is that if you find it distracting, you can turn the feature off completely. The AirPods Hearing Reduction is much more selective. With louder sounds it definitely kicks in, but with softer sounds you may not even notice it working, even though it is.

Connectivity and Multi-Point Pairing

If you are already in the Apple ecosystem across iPhone, iPad, and MacBook, the AirPods Pro 3 are as seamless as it gets. But if you need multi-point pairing that works across different devices and platforms, Bose has you covered. The QC Ultra can connect to two devices at once across different ecosystems.

It is worth noting that the Bose app connection can occasionally be a little finicky. Nine times out of ten it works just fine, but every once in a while it does take a bit longer to connect.

Battery Life

Battery life is a clear win for the AirPods Pro 3. In the best case scenario, you can get up to 10 hours per charge compared to about six hours on the QC Ultra. Features like active noise cancellation will naturally impact those numbers. However, the total battery life with the case is roughly the same on both, coming in at around 24 hours.

Microphone Performance

Microphone performance is where the Bose QC Ultra genuinely surprised during testing. The AirPods Pro 3 microphones sound a little muffled in comparison. A future firmware update may improve performance, but as of right now the QC Ultra sound noticeably better for phone calls.

Testing was done using an iPhone 16 by leaving voicemails, since actual phone calls can sometimes sound different from voice notes. Both outdoor and quiet indoor environments were tested to give a fair and thorough comparison.

Which One Should You Buy?

As always, the answer depends on your priorities. For iOS users, it is hard to look past the AirPods Pro 3. They are good, if not great, at just about everything and they work seamlessly within the Apple ecosystem. There are also new features to consider like live translation and a built-in heart rate sensor. Those features may not appeal to everyone, but for some users they could be a genuine selling point.

If you are not locked into the Apple ecosystem, the QC Ultra offer some clear advantages including a more secure fit, a bigger and bolder sound, true multi-point connection, and currently better microphone performance. As usual, the right choice comes down to your individual needs and preferences.
