If you asked me to pick one microphone regardless of price, the Telefunken 251 would be my first choice for my Sweetwater cart. However, today we’re comparing the Telefunken TF11 vs TF17 microphones. In reality, owning these iconic models at their price point is out of reach for most of us. Fortunately, the fantastic Alchemy range of condenser microphones offers a more affordable alternative, especially with the TF11 and TF17.
Introduction to the Telefunken TF11 and TF17
Telefunken’s most accessible and affordable condenser microphones the TF11 and TF17. The TF11 was introduced in 2020, and in May of last year, Telefunken released the TF17. Both microphones have a similar exterior design and share many of the same accessories. However, they differ significantly in terms of sound, particularly due to the change in capsules.
Aesthetics and Design: TF11 vs TF17
One striking feature of the Telefunken TF17 is its sleek all-black design, especially when fully set up. The minimalist look gives the microphone a modern and professional appearance.
Behind the grill, the Telefunken TF11 is equipped with the classic CK12 capsule, while the TF17 features the K47 capsule. Both capsules are legendary, having been used in some of the most renowned microphones in history. Telefunken’s choice to include these specific capsules shows their focus on keeping the design and accessories of both models the same to minimize costs while providing users with different tonal characteristics.
Capsules: A Key Difference Between TF11 and TF17
The primary distinction between these two microphones is the choice of capsules. The Telefunken TF11 features the CK12 capsule, known for its open, airy sound with a crisp high-end response, making it ideal for capturing vocals with clarity and presence. On the other hand, the Telefunken TF17 comes with the K47 capsule, which delivers a more balanced sound with slightly more emphasis on the low-end frequencies. This difference allows each microphone to cater to different recording needs and preferences.
Sound Comparison
To give you a better idea of how each microphone sounds, I recorded a quick test with both models, showcasing vocals without any added effects. After listening to the sound test, I can say that both microphones perform exceptionally well.
The Telefunken TF11 has a vibrant, sparkly quality that brings a strong vocal performance to life, especially for those looking for an open and clear sound. However, for my personal taste, I’d opt for the TF17. The TF17 provides a bit more weight on the low-end frequencies, which complements my vocal style and enhances the overall tone.
Why I Recommend the TF17
While I’m a big fan of the entire Alchemy series from Telefunken, particularly the TF51, the TF17 is my personal favorite among the two. Its ability to capture a fuller sound with more emphasis on the low-end frequencies makes it a great choice for a wide range of vocal styles.
